Which Chevy SUV Is Right for You?
Trax and Trailblazer: The Under-$25,000 Pair
Both are front-drive-based small SUVs with the same footprint and 54 cubic feet of cargo. The Trax is the value play: an 11-inch touchscreen and wireless CarPlay on every trim, roughly 30 mpg combined, and the lowest price of any new SUV you can buy. The Trailblazer adds available all-wheel drive and the stronger 1.3L engine, which matters if you’re on gravel roads or want a little more passing power on I-40. Equinox: The Most SUV for $30,000
The redesigned Equinox is the best-selling Chevy SUV in Oklahoma City for a reason: a 17.7-inch screen, real back-seat room, 63.5 cubic feet of cargo, and 28 mpg combined, starting around $31,000. LT is the volume trim; RS is the blacked-out look; ACTIV adds all-terrain tires and a raised ride for people who live past the pavement. This is the right answer for most two-row shoppers. Blazer: The Sporty Two-Row
The Blazer is the Equinox’s louder sibling: wider, lower, available with a 308-hp V6 and a 4,500-pound tow rating. It’s the pick if you want a two-row that doesn’t look like a family car. Traverse: Three Rows Without the Truck Frame
Our biggest single SUV stock, usually 25 or more. The Traverse got a full redesign for 2024 with a 2.5L turbo making 328 horsepower, a legit 98 cubic feet of cargo with the rows down, 5,000 pounds of towing and a Z71 trim that handles a county road better than anything this size should. For a family of five or six that doesn’t tow a stock trailer, the Traverse does 90 percent of what a Tahoe does for about $20,000 less and better fuel economy. It’s the SUV we talk the most people down into.
Tahoe and Suburban: Full-Size, Body-on-Frame
If you tow a boat to Lake Hefner or a gooseneck to Stillwater, haul eight people, or just want a V8, this is the tier. The Tahoe comes with a 5.3L V8, a 6.2L V8 or the 3.0L Duramax diesel (the diesel is the quiet star: 495 lb-ft and mid-20s mpg on the highway), tows up to 8,400 pounds, and we usually have close to 20 across LT, RST, Z71, Premier and High Country. The Suburban is the same truck stretched 15 inches, almost all of it cargo behind the third row: 145 cubic feet total and room for nine. Suburban stock is thinner, so ask early. What About the Electric Ones?
Chevrolet also builds the Equinox EV and Blazer EV. We can get either one, and the Equinox EV in particular is a strong value if you charge at home and mostly drive the metro.
