What actually changed on the Silverado 2500 HD for 2027, and whether you should wait for one or buy a 2026 now
Quick answer: The 2027 Silverado 2500 HD is a powertrain year, not a redesign year. Both engines carry new codes (the gas V8 goes from L8T to L8S, the Duramax from L5P to L6P), the 10-speed is now listed as an Allison on both, Adaptive Cruise Control and Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking become standard on every trim, and the 17-inch base wheel is gone in favor of 18s. Cab, bed, interior screens, colors and trim ladder are unchanged. Chevrolet has not yet published horsepower or torque for the new engines, so anyone quoting numbers is guessing. If you need a truck now, the 2026 is the same truck everywhere you’ll touch it, with a known 470-hp Duramax and a real incentive on the hood.
What’s New for the 2027 Silverado 2500 HD
New Engine Codes, Both Engines
The 6.6L gas V8 (L8T) is replaced by a new gas V8 listed as L8S, and the 6.6L Duramax (L5P) is replaced by a new Duramax turbo-diesel V8 listed as L6P. A new RPO code means a revised engine, not a relabel. Output, displacement and tow ratings for both are still blank in the September 2027 order guide.
Allison 10-Speed on Both
The 2027 guide now lists the 10-speed automatic as an Allison behind the gas V8 (MKM) as well as the diesel (MGM), plus the Allison 10-speed with integrated PTO (MGU) for upfit work. The 2026 guide only called them 10-speeds.
Adaptive Cruise Now Standard
On 2026, Adaptive Cruise Control was standard only on High Country and bundled in packages elsewhere. For 2027 it is standard on every trim, Work Truck included.
Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking
Front Pedestrian Braking becomes Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking, standard across the line, alongside the rest of Chevy Safety Assist.
18-Inch Base Wheels
The 17-inch steel and machined-aluminum wheels are gone. The base wheel is now an 18-inch painted steel (fleet) or 18-inch aluminum, with a new LT265/70R18E all-terrain tire and matching spare.
ZR2 Wheel Update
The ZR2’s 18-inch gloss-black wheel with the etched ZR2 logo is replaced by a new 18-inch black aluminum wheel. Still on 35-inch mud-terrains with the 35-inch spare.
What Went Away
- Stars and Steel Special Edition. The 2026-only 250th-anniversary package and its appearance-package version do not carry into 2027.
- 17-inch wheels. Both 17-inch options are dropped; 18 is the new floor.
- Etched ZR2 wheel. Replaced as noted above.
- Trail Boss Package trimmed. The HD Trail Boss Package (the blacked-out LT/LTZ look, not the 1500’s Trail Boss trim) no longer lists the gloss-black painted bumpers and mirror caps. The black grille bar, 20-inch gloss-black wheels, red tow hooks, BFGoodrich off-road tires, black badging, black hood-vent surround and spray-in liner remain. As of the September guide it’s flagged “not available to order at this time,” so ask us before you plan around it.
- Spare-wheel delete no longer deletes the lock. Small fleet detail, but it changes the up-fitter checklist.
What Didn’t Change
Everything you sit in, load, or hook a trailer to. The cab and bed dimensions, the Durabed and Multi-Flex tailgate, the 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google built in, the 12.3-inch driver display, the Bose system on ZR2 and High Country (available on LTZ), the trailering camera package, Hitch Guidance and the Trailering App are all carried over. The trim ladder is the same five plus ZR2: Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ, High Country and ZR2 (with Bison available). The Z71 Off-Road and Protection Package, Duramax and Appearance Package, Midnight Edition, Alaskan Snow Plow Special Edition, Texas Edition and All Star Edition all continue.
Paint is identical, down to the codes: Summit White, Black, Red Hot, Sterling Gray Metallic, Lakeshore Blue Metallic, Cypress Gray, White Sands and Polar White Tricoat. Interiors stay Jet Black and Gideon/Very Dark Atmosphere.

Should You Buy a 2026 or Wait for the 2027?
Buy the 2026 if…
- You need the truck this fall. 2026s are on the ground; 2027 production is just starting and early allocation is thin.
- You want known numbers. 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of Duramax torque is a proven, documented figure with a published tow chart.
- You want the money. Model-year-end incentives on 2026 HD trucks are the best of the year, and there’s no incentive on a truck that isn’t built yet.
- You want the Stars and Steel edition or the current Trail Boss Package. Both are 2026-only as of now.
Wait for the 2027 if…
- You’re ordering anyway. If you’re speccing a Custom with the exact options and color you want, the 2027 order bank is where that build lives.
- You want Adaptive Cruise on a WT or Custom without a package. It’s standard for 2027.
- You’re curious what the new engines bring. If Chevrolet publishes a meaningful bump in output or tow rating, it will matter for gooseneck work. We just don’t know yet.
- You run a fleet on a replacement cycle and the 2026 count you need isn’t in stock.
Our honest read: for most retail buyers and most of our ag and oilfield customers, the 2026 is the better buy this fall because it’s here, it’s discounted, and its drivetrain has years of service history behind it. The 2027 becomes the better truck the day Chevrolet publishes the new engine numbers and the incentives even out, which usually happens in the spring. We’ll tell you which way it’s leaning when you call.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2027 Silverado 2500 HD a redesign?
No. The body, cab, bed, interior and screens carry over from 2026. The changes are under the hood (new engine codes for both the gas V8 and the Duramax), in the standard safety content, and in the wheel lineup.
What are the horsepower and torque numbers for the 2027 Duramax?
Chevrolet hasn’t published them yet. The September 2026 order guide lists the new L6P Duramax without output, displacement or tow figures. The outgoing 2026 L5P Duramax makes 470 hp and 975 lb-ft. We’ll update this page the day the numbers drop.
Does the 2027 still have the 6.6L gas V8?
It has a gas V8, but under a new code (L8S instead of L8T), and Chevrolet has not yet stated its displacement or output. Treat it as a revised engine until the spec sheet is out.
Is Adaptive Cruise Control standard on a 2027 Work Truck?
Yes. For 2027, Adaptive Cruise Control is standard on every Silverado 2500 HD trim, including Work Truck and Custom. On 2026 it was standard only on High Country.
Did the 2027 Silverado HD get new colors?
No. The eight exterior colors and two interiors are identical to 2026.
Should I wait for the 2027 or buy a 2026 HD now?
If you need the truck this year, buy the 2026: it’s in stock, it carries model-year-end incentives, and its powertrain numbers are known.
