GM to Join Forces with Ford to Produce 9- and 10-Speed Transmissions

The days of automakers trying to produce the fastest car on the market are over, but fierce competition is still alive and well.  Nowadays, manufacturers are trying to create the most fuel efficient vehicle possible, so it came as a surprise when General Motors (GM) announced that it would be teaming up with Ford to do just that.

The agreement was announced earlier this month in a press release from GM.  The release outlines an agreement that the two automakers reached to jointly develop new 9- and 10- speed automatic transmissions that could be used in all of their vehicles.

“Engineering teams from GM and Ford have already started initial design work on these new transmissions,” said Jim Lanzon, GM vice president of global transmission engineering. “We expect these new transmissions to raise the standard of technology, performance and quality for our customers while helping drive fuel economy improvements into both company’s future product portfolios.”

Even though the jointly-created technology will be found in both Ford and GM vehicles, you won’t find Chevy Silverado’s and Ford F-150’s with the same engine.  Each automaker will pair the new transmissions with their own, unique powertrain features.

The product of the partnership will soon find its way under the hoods of vehicles on Carter Chevrolet’s Okarche, OK showroom.  Visit us online regularly for the most up-to-date inventory and purchasing information.
