Experience an Oklahoma Food Legend at Eischen’s Bar

February 26th, 2016 by

We at Carter Chevrolet believe that anyone in Oklahoma knows where to find the best fried chicken– Eischen’s Bar.

Eischen’s Bar is the stuff of local legend, despite its location on an unassuming street in Okarche. The restaurant has gained local and national media attention through its food and its history. It had burned down and was rebuilt and was the subject of a 2009 episode of Dinner, Drive-Ins, and Dives on the Food Network.

Eischen’s has earned loyalty and affection from people all around the world as heavily pin-cushioned maps show fans from every continent.

Operating as Oklahoma’s oldest bar, Peter Eischen’s family-owned saloon opened in 1896. It ran until Prohibition put him out of business. However, it was re-established shortly after Prohibition ended in the 1930s.

The bar thrived for decades, but the fried chicken came onto the scene in 1960. There was a Wednesday night shuffleboard tournament held, and the winners were given a fried chicken. The chicken was fried in a black cast-iron skillet on a stove.

The chicken became so popular that it was added to the regular menu. Eventually the popularity of the chicken grew and became the menu staple, and now it is the stuff of Oklahoma food legend. The secret breading recipe yields a perfect crispy exterior with just enough snap and peppery pop to accentuate the succulent poultry.

Eischen’s has the loyalty and respect of locals and renowned foodies alike. When you are ready to experience legendary Oklahoma fried chicken, take cash and be ready for a sensory experience with a deliciously messy meal.
