Chevrolet Volt App Keeps Track of Energy Costs

The Chevrolet Volt will soon allow owners to keep track of their personal driving and charging stats with a new OnStar app called EcoHub. With this new technology, Volt owners can calculate the actual costs of the electricity it takes to charge their vehicle by taking easy to use data from the app using daily, monthly, or even yearly energy use.

How does it do it? EcoHub uses the total home energy data from the local electric company and then compares it with the Volt charging information to show the Volt’s percentage of total energy use. The app then calculates the energy cost based on the owner’s electric company’s electric rates.

EcoHub also gives statistics on total electric-powered miles versus total miles driven to determine the amount of money saved driving electric compared to using gasoline.

This app is currently being tested in a small area to work out any possible kinks before being released across the US. We can expect a full release by 2013, if not by the end of the year.

This is not the only success for the Chevrolet Volt recently as September marked its most successful month yet. GM reported 2,851 Volt vehicles sold in September, four times as many as last year. In addition, the Chevrolet Volt’s year-to-date sales also quadrupled compared to 2011.
