2013 Chevrolet Home Run Derby Another Success
It was another great night at the 2013 Chevrolet Home Run Derby held at Citi Field Monday, July 15. Yoenis Cespedes came in for the win with 17 home runs in the first round, six in the second, and topping it off with nine in the final round, beating his closest competitor, Bryce Harper.
Apparently, back in Cuba, Cespedes had some experience in this whole home run derby thing. He told MLB.com that before his participation this year, he had competed in five derbies, with almost as many fans in the crowd. Citi Field had a sold out crowd this year for the derby with as many as 50,000 fans in attendance. Cespedes had no nerves, though, and brought it home for more than just him. Cespedes won a Chevrolet Silverado out of the contest, and rose over $500,000 for charity. In addition, Chevrolet and MLB will donate $150,000 to charity as well.
All in all, it was another great night in the baseball world, with the All-Star game following Tuesday night, July 16. The American League took the game over the National League, three to nothing. For more information, read the highlights on MLB.com.
