Section 179 Work Truck Deduction in Oklahoma: 2026 Rules and Examples
Commercial Trucks · Tax PlanningSection 179 and the work truck deduction in Oklahoma: 2026 rules, in plain English, with real trucks
Quick answer If your business buys a service body or flatbed truck and puts it to work by December 31, 2026, you can generally deduct the entire purchase price on your 2026 return, even if it is financed. For 2026 the Section 179 limit is $2.56 million, 100% bonus depreciation is back permanently for property acquired after January 19, 2025, and work trucks with a cargo area over six feet long are exempt from the $32,000 heavy-SUV cap. The catch is "placed in service": a truck that arrives in January is a 2027 deduction. Carter has 13 service body trucks and 4 flatbeds on the lot today.
What Section 179 actually does
Normally when a business buys equipment, it deducts the cost a little each year over the asset's useful life, five years for a truck. Section 179 lets you deduct the whole cost in the year you buy it instead. Bonus depreciation does the same thing by a different route. Either way, a $66,000 truck becomes a $66,000 deduction in 2026 rather than roughly $13,000 a year for five years.
It does not make the truck free. It moves the tax benefit forward to the year you need the cash. For a business having a good year, that is usually worth a lot.

Why work trucks beat SUVs and half-tons here
Most people have heard that a vehicle over 6,000 lb GVWR qualifies for Section 179. True, but for SUVs and most crew-cab pickups with a short bed, the first-year deduction is capped at $32,000. The cap does not apply if the vehicle has:
- A cargo area at least six feet long that is not readily accessible from the passenger compartment, or
- A fully enclosed driver compartment and cargo area with no seating behind the driver (a cargo van), or
- Seating for nine or more behind the driver.
A Stahl service body or a CM flatbed on a Silverado 2500HD or 3500HD is a cargo area well over six feet long that you cannot reach from the cab. That makes the whole truck, body included, eligible for first-year expensing. A loaded Tahoe or a short-bed 1500 crew cab does not get that treatment.
Three real examples from our lot
These are trucks in stock at Carter as of October 5, 2026, at our Friends of Carter price including the installed body. The tax-savings columns are simple illustrations at two common marginal rates assuming 100% business use; your actual savings depend on your entity type, income, state tax and what else you bought this year.
| Truck | Price | First-year deduction | Tax saved at 24% | Tax saved at 37% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stahl service body truck, Stock 30638 | $66,573 | $66,573 | $15,978 | $24,632 |
| CM flatbed, 3500HD Duramax crew cab, Stock 30478 | $76,131 | $76,131 | $18,271 | $28,168 |
| Stahl enclosed utility body, Stock 30594 | $76,573 | $76,573 | $18,378 | $28,332 |
Put differently: on the $66,573 service body truck, a business in the 24% bracket could see roughly $16,000 less in federal tax for 2026. Financed over 72 months, that is more than a year of payments covered by the deduction.
The December 31 problem
A simple checklist before you buy
Call your CPA first
Ask two questions: does my business have the income to use a deduction this size in 2026, and should it be Section 179, bonus depreciation, or a mix? Five minutes now avoids a surprise in April.
Title the truck to the business
Or to you with a documented business-use percentage. The dealer paperwork should match how the CPA wants it on the return.
Take delivery before December 31
And have the truck actually working: tools loaded, on jobs, mileage log started. Delivery on the 31st counts; delivery on the 2nd does not.
Keep the body invoice with the truck invoice
At Carter the body is on the vehicle invoice, which keeps it simple. If you buy a chassis and upfit elsewhere, both invoices support the deduction.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Section 179 limit for 2026?
For tax years beginning in 2026, a business can expense up to $2.56 million of qualifying equipment in the year it is placed in service, and the deduction starts phasing out once total purchases pass $4.09 million. Almost no small or mid-size Oklahoma business will get near either number, so in practice a work truck is fully deductible in year one.
Is 100% bonus depreciation back?
Yes. The 2025 tax law made 100% bonus depreciation permanent for qualifying property acquired and placed in service after January 19, 2025. Bonus depreciation has no dollar cap and no business-income limit, so it is often the simpler route for a vehicle. Your CPA will pick the combination that fits your return.
Does the $32,000 heavy SUV cap apply to a work truck?
Not to a service body or flatbed truck. The cap applies to SUVs and pickups between 6,001 and 14,000 lb GVWR unless the vehicle has a cargo area at least six feet long that is not readily accessible from the passenger compartment, or an enclosed cargo area with no seating behind the driver. A Stahl service body or a CM flatbed on a 2500HD or 3500HD meets that test, so the full price can be deducted.
What does 'placed in service' mean for a truck?
It means the truck is in your possession and ready to use in your business, not that you signed a contract or paid a deposit. If you take delivery of a truck on December 29 and it is titled to the business and ready to work, it counts for 2026. If it is ordered and arrives January 8, it is a 2027 deduction. That is why in-stock upfitted trucks matter in the fourth quarter.
Can I take Section 179 on a financed truck?
Yes. The deduction is based on the purchase price, not on what you have paid so far. A truck financed over 60 or 72 months is still fully deductible in the year it is placed in service, which is why the first-year tax savings can exceed your first year of payments.
What if I use the truck personally too?
The vehicle has to be used more than 50% for business to qualify at all, and the deduction is limited to the business-use percentage. A dedicated service body truck is almost always 100% business use. Keep a mileage log; it is the first thing an auditor asks for.
Does Oklahoma follow the federal Section 179 rules?
Oklahoma generally starts from federal taxable income, so the federal deduction usually flows through to your Oklahoma return. State treatment of bonus depreciation can differ, and this is exactly the kind of detail to confirm with your tax preparer rather than a car dealer.
