Why Carter Chevrolet Isn’t Always the Lowest Price (and How We Price)
Buying From Carter · Pricing · OklahomaWhy Carter Chevrolet isn’t always the lowest price online, and why our price is still the better deal
Quick answer We don’t promise the lowest number on the screen. We promise a fair one: we check every vehicle we sell against the market, same year, make, model and trim, VIN by VIN, and price it in line. Then we leave the price alone. No doc fee, no addendum, no hidden add-ons (most of our vehicles are tinted; it’s listed as its own line online), no “must finance with us.” The number you see is the number on the contract. What you get on top of it: a process you can do entirely online, free delivery in the OKC metro, factory-trained technicians, 12–18 loaner vehicles on the lot at all times, and a dealership that has been family-owned in Okarche since 1973 and is women-owned today.
We’re not always the lowest number online. Here’s why.
If you shop a Silverado or a Tahoe across three or four dealer websites, you’ll find a spread of a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars on what looks like the same truck. Some of that is real; dealers have different costs and different inventory pressure. A lot of it isn’t. An advertised price can be built from rebates most people don’t qualify for, it can leave out a doc fee that Oklahoma doesn’t cap, it can sit on top of an addendum sticker or a required protection package, or it can require you to finance through the dealer’s lender at the dealer’s rate. Sometimes the price is simply stale. That’s why we can’t always price-match what you saw online: we’d be matching a number that may not exist on anyone’s contract.
We’d rather tell you that up front than win the click and lose you at the desk.
| Line item | What a “lowest price” quote often hides | At Carter |
|---|---|---|
| Documentation fee | Oklahoma doesn’t cap doc fees; several hundred dollars is common and it isn’t in the advertised price. | $0. |
| Addendum / market adjustment | A second sticker next to the window sticker. Shows up at the desk, not online. | None. |
| Pre-installed add-ons | Nitrogen, etch, paint sealant, “protection package.” Often $500–$2,000, often not optional. | Window tint on most vehicles, shown as its own line on the listing and the math box before you ask. No nitrogen, etch, sealant or “protection package.” Other accessories are yours to choose, priced separately. |
| Conditional rebates | The online price assumes every rebate at once: loyalty, conquest, military, first responder, lease-in-household. Most buyers qualify for one or two. | We show you which ones you actually qualify for before you drive out. |
| “Must finance with us” | The low number requires financing through the dealer’s lender, sometimes at a higher rate. Cash or your own bank costs more. | Same price cash, your bank, or ours. |
| Is the vehicle actually there? | Sometimes the price is on a unit that sold last week, or an in-transit unit with no ETA. | Our prices are on vehicles on our lot. We’ll video-walk the exact VIN. |
How we actually set our prices
Every vehicle on our lot is priced with software that searches the web for the same year, make, model and trim and compares them to ours VIN by VIN, equipment to equipment, so a crew cab with the trailering package isn’t being compared to one without it. We look at where the market is and we price in line with it. Not the lowest, not the highest; current and fair. Prices are reviewed regularly, so if the market moves, ours moves with it.
If you find the same vehicle, same equipment, for less, tell us. We’ll look at it honestly. Sometimes we can move. Sometimes the other price isn’t real once you read the fine print, and we’ll show you where. Either way you’ll get a straight answer, not a “let me talk to my manager.”
How to compare dealers so the comparison is real
Ask for the out-the-door number
Price, doc fee, any addendum or add-ons, tax, title and tag. Written. That’s the only number that can be compared across dealers. Ours comes with two of those lines at zero.
Ask which rebates are in it, and which ones you qualify for
“Price includes all available incentives” usually means it includes incentives that can’t all apply to one buyer. Ask for the list.
Ask whether the price changes if you pay cash or use your own bank
At Carter it doesn’t. At some stores the advertised price is a financing price.
Ask for the VIN and a video
Confirms the vehicle exists, is on the lot, and has the equipment the price assumes. We do live walkarounds on any unit.
What you get for a fair price at Carter
Easy, no runaround
One point of contact. Real numbers on the first call. No four-square, no “what would it take.” If a deal doesn’t work we say so and tell you what would.
As much online as you want
Browse, get a trade number from photos and a VIN, get financed and e-sign from home, and have it delivered, free in the OKC metro. Or come to Okarche and do it in person. Your call, any mix.
Factory-trained technicians
GM-trained techs working on Chevrolets all day, with GM diagnostic tools and GM parts. The people who service the truck after the sale are the reason a lot of our customers buy the next one here.
12–18 loaner vehicles, always
A vehicle in the shop shouldn’t cost you a day of work. We keep 12 to 18 loaners on the lot at all times, which is unusual for a store our size. Ask for one when you schedule service.
Women-owned, locally owned
Carter is owned by Lisha Oshman and has been family-owned in Okarche since 1973. Decisions get made here, by people you can call, not at a group office in another state.
Statewide, not just Okarche
We sell and deliver across Oklahoma. OKC, Edmond, Yukon, Enid, Stillwater, Tulsa; here’s how that works from the metro.
The loaner thing, because it matters more than people expect
Most dealers keep a handful of loaners and ration them to warranty jobs. We keep 12 to 18 on the lot every day. That means when your Silverado needs a day in the shop, you’re not arranging a ride, burning a vacation day, or paying for a rental. You drop off, you drive away, you come back when it’s done. Over five or six years of ownership that is worth real money and real time, and it’s a bigger part of the “total cost” of a vehicle than a few hundred dollars on the front end. Availability depends on the day’s schedule, so mention it when you book; we’ll do our best to have one waiting.
When another dealer is the right call
If the only thing that matters to you is the lowest number, you’re willing to drive to get it, and you’re comfortable negotiating the fees back out at the desk, you may save a few hundred dollars somewhere else, and we’d rather you know that than feel misled. What we’re offering is a fair, checked price with nothing added to it, from people who’ll still answer the phone three years from now when the truck needs something. For most of our customers that math works out in our favor. If it doesn’t for you, no hard feelings.
Frequently asked questions
Does Carter Chevrolet price-match other dealers?
Not automatically, because online prices often aren't the real price: they can leave out doc fees, addendums, add-ons, or assume rebates you don't qualify for. If you find the same vehicle with the same equipment for less, show us and we'll look at it honestly. Sometimes we can move; sometimes we'll show you why the other number won't survive the contract.
How does Carter set its prices?
Software searches the web for the same year, make, model and trim and compares each of our vehicles VIN by VIN, equipment to equipment, against the market. We price in line with that and review regularly. Not the lowest, not the highest; current and fair.
Does Carter charge a doc fee?
No. Carter does not charge a documentation fee or an addendum. Oklahoma doesn't cap doc fees, and several hundred dollars is common elsewhere, so compare out-the-door numbers, not advertised prices.
Is the price different if I pay cash or use my own bank?
No. Same price whether you pay cash, bring your own financing, or finance through one of our lenders.
What is an out-the-door price and why ask for it?
Vehicle price plus doc fee, any addendum or add-ons, tax, title and tag. It's the only number that can be compared fairly across dealers, because advertised prices leave different things out.
Does Carter have loaner vehicles?
Yes. Carter keeps 12 to 18 loaner vehicles on the lot at all times. Availability depends on the day's schedule, so ask for one when you book service.
Can I buy a car from Carter without coming to Okarche?
Yes. Trade appraisal from photos and a VIN, financing and e-signature from home, live video walkaround of the exact vehicle, and delivery that's free in the OKC metro and quoted statewide. Or do any part of it in person.
Is Carter Chevrolet locally owned?
Yes. Carter has been family-owned in Okarche since 1973 and is owned today by Lisha Oshman. It is a women-owned, locally owned dealership.
