GM Super Cruise FAQs

What is GM Super Cruise?

GM Super Cruise is the next big thing in driving technology. It turns driving on compatible roads into a relaxing experience where you don't even need to keep your hands on the wheel. It employs different tech components like cameras, sensors, GPS, and some fancy Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) maps to keep your car centered in its lane.

GM Super Cruise builds on Adaptive Cruise Control, which can speed up or slow down to maintain a comfortable distance from the car in front of you. It can also handle lane changes for you. With Lane Change on Demand, just flick on your turn signal, and the car will switch lanes. If you have Automatic Lane Change specified in the settings, it'll do that itself.

Where Can I Use GM Super Cruise?

Super Cruise is designed to work only on specific roads where the lanes are clearly separated from oncoming traffic. It's perfect for divided highways but not for regular neighborhood streets. Right now, over 400,000 miles of roads in the U.S. and Canada support Super Cruise. These routes have been uniquely mapped using LiDAR technology to give Super Cruise the information it needs for hands-free driving.

How Does GM Super Cruise Work?

GM Super Cruise relies on cameras, sensors, GPS data, and detailed LiDAR maps to help steer the car and keep it centered in its lane. That said, staying alert and watching the road while you're using it is still vital.

Is GM Super Cruise A Self-Driving Feature?

No, GM Super Cruise is not a self-driving feature. GM Super Cruise is meant to keep you in your lane, but it's imperative to stay alert just in case you need to take over, like for emergencies, getting off the highway, making turns, stopping for signals, or doing any other driving moves. You also need to remember that Super Cruise only works on certain roads.

Do I Still Need To Pay Attention To The Road Even With GM Super Cruise Activated?

Yes, you do. When using Super Cruise, it's crucial to be ready to grab the steering wheel or hit the brakes anytime. A Driver Attention Camera is positioned above the steering column to check where you're looking to ensure you're focused on driving. If your attention seems to be drifting, the steering wheel's light bar will blink green. But if you keep zoning out or need to take control immediately, that light bar will switch to red.

If you don't respond after the first two alerts, you'll hear a voice prompt, and the car will gradually come to a stop with its hazard lights flashing. It will also contact OnStar Emergency Services so an OnStar Emergency-Certified Advisor can check in with you.

How Do I Activate GM Super Cruise?

Activating Super Cruise is easy. When you're driving on a road that works with it, just turn on your Adaptive Cruise Control and set your desired speed. Keep an eye out for the white Super Cruise steering wheel icon in your driver information center. Once you see it, it means that Super Cruise is ready to go. Just hit the button on your steering wheel, which looks like a steering wheel itself, to activate it.

The light bar at the top of your wheel will glow green when Super Cruise is up and running. If it's safe and legal, you can take your hands off the wheel. Just remember to keep looking at the road.

Since every car is slightly different, be sure to check your owner's manual for more specific instructions or contact us for help.
